Weekend Update

Had a great weekend in KC. If I could have rented a new respiratory system for the weekend (well, at least lungs, throat and sinuses) it would have been even better, but that's how it goes. I managed to survive without collapsing or coughing all over anyone, which I'm sure everyone appreciates.

The quick review: long drive, musical hotels, awesome massage, excellent dinner with friends, a little shopping, a night in, a day at the faire, attacked by wenches, awesome soup, long drive.

We ([livejournal.com profile] fyreseer and I) left Aurora around 6:30PM. For whatever reason, we hadn't really planned things out too well, and ended up bringing one of our cats, Mr. Cole, along for the trip, as the pet sitter was booked. This was his first trip in the car, and even though we thought we were prepared, he had a small accident on fyreseer's lap about an hour into the trip. So we pulled off to the side of the road, wiped down what we could, set up the travelling litter box (yes, we should have set this up before we left), fyrseer changed jeans and then hit the road again, with a brief stop at the next truckstop to pick up some cleaning supplies.

The rest of the drive being uneventful, we pulled into the hotel in KC around 2:30AM. Again, this being the well-in-advance-planned trip that it was, we made our reservations just before we got in the car. And, this being a a race weekend, just about everything in the city was booked and/or charging a premium - and, of course, we needed someplace that would allow us to take Mr. Cole in. We ended up finding one of those extended-stay places way over in Independence.

Upon waking in the morning, we quickly decided to see if we could find another place - a queen sized bed for the two of us just doesn't work too well, and the place was completely on the other side of the city from about 99% of the things we wanted to do. A quick search online netted us a room with two double beds at the Motel 6 in Lenexa. Not exactly the Ritz, but it would do just fine. After checking into the new hotel, we had lunch at Mimi's Cafe, which was delicious.

4:00 rolled around and brought one of the highlights of my weekend - an amazing massage from [livejournal.com profile] starwyse, which was long, long, long overdue. A while ago, Star posted her results from the "What Sci-fi Character Are You?" meme: Asajj Ventress. By some odd twist of fate, I had just seen this figurine of her the night before, and ended up going out later that day and getting one for her, which I brought with me on Friday.

So I gave her the figurine and then it was off to dinner at D's & R's house. As usual, R made a very simple, but fantastic dinner: hummous, wasabe peas, chicken, rice (with an onion, waltnut and mushroom sauce) and a mixed greens salad. For dessert were some delicious chocolates, including some "Aztec Chocolate," which had cinnamon and hot peppers in it – it started off smooth and sweet, just like any other premium milk chocolate, but finishes with a kick. I can't remember where they said they got it, but it is a small, mom & pop place just down the street from them in KCMO. I'll have to get the name of the shop from them again.

Saturday was another lazy day, which was nice for a change. We got up late, grabbed some food and wandered over to one of our friend's new house. Fyreseer learned of a new store from J, so we headed over to Old Time Pottery at Noland Rd. & Rt. 40. I typically don't like those crafts & home stores (like Hobby Lobby), but OTP was pretty cool... they had tons of stuff: kitchen gadgets, pottery, dishes, glasses, artwork, linens, etc. I did get bored after a while and went across the street to BestBuy while Fyreseer finished her shopping. Somehow we managed to fit it all in the car. LOL.

We grabbed some food and headed back to the room. We were supposed to go out, either to the Witch's Ball or down to Balanca's, but we were both tired and not feeling our best, so we ended up just hanging out at the room watching TV and eventually some, um... er.... "independent films" that I had on my laptop....

Sunday was spent at the KC Renaissance Faire, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] starwyse. What a blast! A few weeks ago Fyreseer and I visited my brother up in MN and went to the MN Ren. Faire, where I found the perfect Faire shirt (for the general public, anyway), which says, "Wenches Want Me." Anyway, between the smiles, laughs and looks that I got for wearing that shirt at KCRF, seeing the Fair from an insider's perspective, and not having any particular schedule or agenda, it was a wonderful day.

I met and was molested by a host of lovely wenches: Madam Red ([livejournal.com profile] rougewench), Mistress Cocquette ([livejournal.com profile] angelbedwell), Mistress Rose ([livejournal.com profile] cedarsong) and Mistress Azure ([livejournal.com profile] everflame). If I got a lot of looks before I met up with the wenches, it was nothing compared to afterwards, when my head was covered in lip-prints. :-D

I do have pictures and will post a bunch when I get them edited.

After hanging out at the Faire all day, Starwyse invited us to a dinner she was hosting at another KCRF friend's house (I don't know Robin's LJ name, or I'd link to her) for all her KCRF tribe. Fyreseer was exhausted and crashed when we got back to the room in between Faire & dinner, but I went over and enjoyed a couple bowls of the most delicious baked potato soup I have ever had... must get the recipe from Starwyse. I rang the doorbell, thus announcing that someone that noone there knew had arrived. I was greeted by a round of "Come in"s, with a few "It's the knob on the right"s and stood before a group of close to 20 people: "Everyone, this is Nate," followed by a rousing chorus of "Hi, Nate," to which I somewhat sheepishly replied, "Hi, everyone." What a great bunch of people. Everyone was genuine and kind and welcomed me in. Everyone was tired from the day's work at the Faire, and it was fun to hear some of the behind-the-scenes talk.

On the way out, I got the chance to connect a bit more with Star. (I really miss you!!!) For those that may not know, Star came into my life through Fyreseer, and quickly became one of my closest friends and mentors. She performed our wedding and has remained close despite the distance.

Monday brought a brief stop at Star's and then the long trek back to Aurora.

I think we're pretty much decided to move back to KC as soon as we're able... most likely sometime next spring or summer. Much of the timing will depend on securing jobs for the two of us and saving up the money to move and acquiring shelter. That could manifest sooner, but we shall see.

Anyway, it was a great weekend. I really enjoyed meeting everyone, and hope that many new friendships will grow. I look forward to seeing you all again (and please forgive me if I can't remember your name... I'm terrible with names/faces).

I'm tired and a still not 100%. I'm headed to the Doc's tomorrow just to make sure everything's ok. Otherwise, I'm feeling pretty good.

More to come later... including pictures.

I met Star a few weeks ago in Lawrence at a belly dance event. She's an interesting, nice person.
